WFAN’s Evan Roberts has a meltdown after Nets’ James Harden trade

In the wake of the blockbuster trade that sent James Harden to Brooklyn — and an endless array of draft picks and a pair of young players to Houston — one of the Nets’ most outspoken (and only) fans was not impressed.

“My first reaction is shock, awe and I’m pissed off,” WFAN host Evan Roberts said on the radio station as the details of the trade emerged Wednesday. “That this general manager [Sean Marks], who talked about culture for 87 years now and he’s gonna trade every draft pick — because you know they’re all gone. Every damn draft pick ever created is gone. Caris LeVert’s gone. They’re all gone. Did Sean Marks trade everybody?”

Not quite, but close.

Marks did trade LeVert — and Jarrett Allen — along with three first-round draft picks and four first-round draft swaps to the Rockets in exchange for Harden, who will team with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.

The deal is similar to the one the man Marks replaced — Billy King — made with Boston in 2013, when the Nets traded three unprotected first-round picks to the Celtics in exchange for Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce prior to the franchise’s move from New Jersey to Brooklyn.

That trade was famously a disaster for the Nets, who finally emerged from the depths of that deal when they signed Durant and Irving to go along with young players like LeVert and Allen.

“Oh God, here we go Billy King,” Roberts said as co-host Craig Carton revealed the details of the trade. “They gave up everybody. So there’s nothing left now. I just want to cry. It’s awful.”

Roberts’ mood did not improve as the segment went on.

“Doesn’t Sean Marks remember?” Roberts said. “You inherited this [situation]. Do you not realize what this could lead to? You’re leading down the road of doom. Harden and Durant could be gone in a year and a half [with opt-outs] and I’m not convinced this gives them a better chance to win a title… I’m living a nightmare again.”

Roberts admitted that at the time of the trade with Boston, he “loved” the move.

This time, Roberts said, “they better freaking win. [They’ve got] two seasons to win a championship. [If they do], save the tape and use it against me. But right now, today is a sad day.”
