The decision of Canal + to return the two matches that it broadcasts seems questionable.
The announcement made by Maxime Saada had the effect of a bomb on Tuesday. The boss of Canal + has indeed told Figaro to have decided to return to the League the rights of the two Ligue 1 matches broadcast by Canal in order to force the LFP to proceed to a new call for tenders. With the desire, in fine, to see TV rights being negotiated downwards. An obviously catastrophic decision for French football, already very shaken by the withdrawal of Mediapro.

But according to RMC Sport, this announcement looks like a bluff. Canal would not be in a position to do so. Because if Canal broadcasts two Ligue 1 matches, it is only under an agreement with BeIN Sport, which had acquired, for 330 million euros, this lot 3 during the call for tenders in 2018.
The LFP refused the restitution
The encrypted channel can at most restore its rights to BeIN, but not to the League. And the Qatari group, also owner of the PSG, does not seem able to put an end to the contract that binds it to the League unless, like Mediapro, it no longer honor its drafts. Unless, according to specialist Pierre Rondeau, to attack the LFP for an anti-competitive agreement with the future broadcaster of the rights abandoned by Mediapro, the value of the latter having nothing to do with that which was current in 2018.
According to Le Parisien, the LFP has also refused the restitution of the two matches broadcast by Canal, arguing as expected that the lot belonged to BeIN. And this while waiting for the board of directors of the League “Gives the way forward”.
