Fourth in the Tour de France in 2019, the German rider Emanuel Buchmann will be well at the start this year too, despite his heavy fall on the Giro.
Emanuel Buchmann is going to take part in his sixth Tour de France! Fourth in 2019 behind Egan Bernal, Geraint Thomas and Steven Kruijswijk, the 28-year-old German rider has been integrated into the Bora-Hansgrohe team to be at the start of Brest on June 26. However, this was not a given, because the climber had fallen heavily during the 15th stage of the Giro, in which he was participating for the first time and in which he occupied sixth place in the general classification.. Victim of a concussion and hit in the knee, he is now well and a last successful altitude training camp in Livigno in Italy has validated his participation in the Tour. However, he will not aim for the general classification because he does not consider himself sufficiently prepared, and will be the lieutenant of Wilco Kelderman, who has never shone on the Grande Boucle (79th in 2015, 32nd in 2016, retirement in 2019) .
Buchmann will have freedom but will not be leader
“For the second year in a row, Emanuel had to say goodbye to a goal he had been aiming for for months (he had competed in the 2020 Tour being down after a fall on the Dauphiné, editor’s note). It’s quite difficult and I have a lot of respect for the way he handled the situation, and that he’s now trying to attack again on the Tour. However, it is also clear that Wilco is our leader. After some setbacks in the spring, his preparation went very well in recent weeks, and at the Dauphiné, it was clear that he could be up to the task (he finished 4th, editor’s note). He will be 100% supported by the team. Emu will have the freedom, but you also have to be realistic: the Tour route is not ideal for him, and he abandoned the Giro injured ”, explained the manager of the team Ralf Denk, who will also be able to count on a certain Peter Sagan, who will play his last Tour under the colors of the German formation.
