Thanks to a hat-trick from Gabin Villière, RC Toulon dominated Clermont with a score of 27-9 at the end of the 12th day of Top 14.
The six matches of Boxing Day 2020 (Castres – Bayonne has been postponed) will therefore have ended with six home victories! The last match of this Sunday indeed ended with Toulon’s 27-9 victory against Clermont in Mayol. For the first time since 2012, the RCT therefore ends a calendar year undefeated at home, even though there were fewer games than usual in 2020 following the stoppage of last season. However, it was the Clermontois who led 9-0 in this match after 21 minutes, after three successful penalties by Sébastien Bézy.
But in the 26th, Gabin Villière started his festival by scoring the first try of the game, after a pass at the foot of Louis Carbonel (7-9). Then eleven minutes later, the young international offered himself a brace, by appearing to go flatten, after Sergio Parisse had dropped the ball back (14-9, mt). Just after the restart, Toulon found itself at 14 after the yellow card scooped by Christopher Tolofua for an anti-play fault, but that did not change much, on the contrary.
Carbonel added two penalties to bring the score to 20-9, and in the 58th, Villière scored his third try of the evening, after a collective movement and a last assist from Duncan Paia’aua. It was therefore the bonus try, and no points were scored afterwards. The yellow card received by Paia’aua in the 76th for a dangerous shoulder charge on Cheikh Tiberghien did not allow ASM to score. Toulon therefore takes five points and finds itself fourth, six points behind the leader of La Rochelle, with a game late. Clermont is seventh, with two games late.
