Not every team is waiting for the holidays to end to get aggressive.
New Mets owner Steve Cohen continued to share his Twitter commentary on the MLB offseason Monday night after the Padres acquired Blake Snell from the Rays.
“Hey , Give the Padres credit,” Cohen wrote to his 130,000 followers. “They had a top 5 farm system that gave them flexibility to trade for Snell. Newsflash, the Mets farm system needs to be replenished .”
The Padres sent top pitching prospect Luis Patino, as well as catchers Francisco Mejia and Blake Hunt and righty pitcher Cole Wilcox, to the defending AL East champs to acquire the lefty ace. Then they used more pieces from their farm system depth to land NL Cy Young runner-up Yu Darvish from the Cubs.
The move, seen as a salary dump by Chicago, did not require San Diego to give up any of their elite prospects.
Building up the Mets farm system is a priority for new team president Sandy Alderson. The Post has reported that they hope to add to the big-league team via free agency instead of trades that would further deplete their minor-league talent.
The Mets have already signed reliever Trevor May and catcher James McCann, with high-priced targets George Springer and Trevor Bauer still on their radar in this slow-moving free agency.
“Not much going [on] out there due to the holidays,” Cohen tweeted Sunday after saying he was going to reach out to GM Jared Porter.
“Conversations hopefully pick up this week.”
The previous Mets regime, led by the Wilpons and former GM Brodie Van Wagenen, were criticized for trading away some of the Mets top prospects, most notably Jarred Kelenic. The prized outfielder was part of the 2018 trade that sent closer Edwin Diaz and veteran second baseman Robinson Cano to the Mets.
Diaz has not regained the top-notch form he had in Seattle, while Cano was recently suspended for the entire 2020 season due to his second failed PED test.
