The numbers in Dallas aren’t pretty.
The NHL announced on Tuesday — the day before the shortened 2020-21 season opens — that 17 of the league’s 27 positive COVID-19 tests came from the Stars.
According to the NHL, most of the Dallas players “are asymptomatic and all of whom are currently recovering without complication.”
The league performed approximately 12,000 tests to more than 1,200 players, it said in a press release.
Still, the number of positive results for Dallas is jarring.
The team closed its practice facility on Friday after it announced six players and two staffers were positive for COVID-19. The Stars returned to practice on Tuesday, still not sure when they would open their season after their first three games were postponed due to the outbreak.
Dallas’ first game would not be until at least Jan. 19, almost a week into the season.
“We don’t know if we’re playing [Jan. 19] or not,” coach Rick Bowness told reporters. “That gives us six practices to [Jan. 19], eight to [Jan. 22]. So we’ve got a lot of work to do, it’s as simple as that, with the players we have, and we’re trying to cover things without jumping too quickly from one area to another. Today was a good day, especially after five days off the ice. The guys worked hard.”
