A failed drug test kept Sha’Carri Richardson from competing in the upcoming Olympic Games, but the U.S. track star is still in the limelight.
Richardson is the focal point of a new Beats by Dre commercial, which first aired Tuesday night during Game 6 of the NBA Finals. Richardson, sporting a pair of Nike cleats and Beats by Dre earbuds, is seen preparing to start out of the blocks.
Toward the end of the ad, the phrase “Live Your Truth” appears on the screen, while Kanye West’s new song, “No Child Left Behind,” blares in the background.
Richardson’s Olympic dreams came crashing down in June when the World Anti-Doping Agency and USA Track and Field suspended her for 30 days after she tested positive for marijuana at the Olympic Trials. The ban forced Richardson, seen as a top gold medal contender for the 100-meter individual race, to miss the event.
USA Track and Field also opted to leave Richardson off the roster for the 4×100 relays, which begin on Aug. 5 – nine days after her 30-day ban is lifted.
Richardson later admitted to using marijuana to cope with the death of her biological mother. In an interview with TMZ Sports earlier in July, she seemed at peace with her suspension.
“I understand the situation that’s going on,” Richardson said. “So, I’m accepting of it, and I just know what I have to do moving forward in my career.”
