A new rape case shakes French sport after an investigation opened in the world of women’s gymnastics.
The Saint-Etienne prosecutor’s office announced on Tuesday the opening of an investigation after accusations of alleged rapes allegedly committed within the France Pole of women’s gymnastics in Saint-Etienne, in the 80s and 90s. this investigation, entrusted to the Research Brigade of the Saint-Etienne gendarmerie, comes after new complaints for sexual assault and rape filed in 2020 and 2021 by former gymnasts towards a volunteer coach from the Pôle France de Saint-Etienne , now 79 years old, Robert C.
Many high-level gymnasts heard in this case
The complaints of these gymnasts, who were 12 or 13 years old at the time of the facts, had until then been dismissed because of prescription, the same source added. The examination of one of them, which had been closed in 2010, “reveals that additional investigative acts are likely to contribute to the complete manifestation of the truth,” said in a statement David Charmatz, the prosecutor of the Republic of Saint-Etienne.

“This situation justifies that new investigations be carried out, which will also relate to similar facts which would have been committed in 1985-1986, by the same individual, and which have just been denounced by another gymnast of the pole Stéphanois, old to the ‘time of 12 or 13 years, ”he continued. Alerted last spring by reports of former gymnasts, the French Gymnastics Federation for its part requested the opening of an administrative investigation, entrusted to the Departmental Directorate of Social Cohesion of the Loire.

Pending the conclusions of this administrative inquiry, for which many former high-level gymnasts are heard, the prefecture of the Loire told AFP that it had taken a “protective measure of temporary prohibition from exercising any function of ‘supervision for six months’ towards Muriel Cavallero, a former coach of the Pôle France de Saint-Etienne, accused of not having revealed the facts after having received the confidences of young victims. Ms. Cavallero for her part recently resigned from her various mandates in the gymnastics industry: member of the board of directors of the Pôle France de Saint-Etienne, vice-president of the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes regional committee and member of the national training commission of the FFGym, a source close to the matter told AFP.
