INTERVIEW – The discus thrower from Isère is one of the 12 candidates to become the flag bearer of the French delegation at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
Flag bearer. Mother of two children, Mélina Robert-Michon (41 years old), figure of French athletics, will live her 6es Olympic Games (after Sydney in 2000, Athens in 2004, Beijing in 2008, London in 2012 and Rio de Janeiro in 2016). Her experience and her career earned her to be included in the list of twelve athletes, including seven women, candidates for the prestigious role of flag bearer.
LE FIGARO: Did your candidacy to be a flag bearer seem obvious to you from the outset?
Mélina ROBERT-MICHON: Obvious, no, because it’s never easy to say that we are legitimate for a role which is, in my eyes, as important. I thought about it, I listened to what I was told… For me, being a flag bearer seemed inaccessible to me. I remember the first time I experienced the Games, in Sydney in 2000, and back then, I never imagined that at some point I could claim such an honor.
