One of the lone lighthearted moments of the Knicks’ disappointing home opener against the Sixers on Saturday was Reggie Bullock’s wardrobe malfunction.
With the Knicks wearing for the first time their new city-edition jerseys, the starting shooting guard had no clue he was provided a defective jersey.
On the front was his correct number, 25. However, the back had Mitchell Robinson’s number, 23.
Bullock had no idea as social media buzzed throughout the first quarter.
“I definitely found out later,” Bullock said after Tuesday’s shootaround in Cleveland. “Our jerseys (in our locker) are not turned around. (The front) is facing us in the locker room. So it was normal routine, going in the locker room and putting my jersey on.
“If I would’ve noticed it, I definitely wouldn’t have put the jersey on. But it was pretty funny. It was a hilarious thing for the team. We got good laughs out of it.”
Late in the first quarter, Bullock raced over to the sidelines to retrieve a new, corrected version. And swapped it out in view of the MSG Network cameras.
“Never happened to me before,” Bullock said. “I thought it was pretty funny. As long as they had the last name right, which was good.”
He heard a lot of wisecracks in the aftermath, putting a humorous touch on an otherwise lousy 109-89 loss to the Sixers.
“(A social media basketball comedian) was saying a lot of jokes and thought he was tripping when he saw 25 on the front and 23 on the back,” Bullock said. “It got a lot of retweets. I had family and friends send me videos. They thought I was tripping about putting someone else’s jersey. It was just a mess-up but all fun and games.”
The 29-year-old has started in the Knicks’ first three games, averaging 8 points. He’s one of their best 3-point shooters and defenders, but there’s a chance Alec Burks will eventually be moved into the starting lineup.
Bullock is hitting his 3s at a 35.7 percent click. Last season, which started on time in October, he didn’t make his Knicks debut until January after rehabbing from spinal fusion surgery.
“I’ve worked on my body a lot,” Bullock said before the Knicks began a four-game road trip. “I got my body right. I’m really taking care of my body a lot this season. The neck issue is something behind me now.”
