Here come the New Zealand openers, decked out in the beige. Daniel Sams takes the new ball…
7.10pm Garv Asnani: “Where is Josh Hazlewood, Mitch Starc and Pat Cummins” They were due to be on the Test tour of South Africa
Asher: “Do Australia need five bowlers Maxie, Stoinis and Marsh? Could have played McDermott in place of one of the bowlers – possibly Sams.” Plenty of options in all departments
7.00pm Hello everyone, we ready for this? Should be good fun.
Before the cricket, though, a moment of silence in memory of those who died and those injured in Christchurch earthquake.
6.55pm The great Andrew McGlashan is going to step in for the first 10 overs. G’day Gnasher.
6.45pm It is a significant occasion in Christchurch this week. It’s the 10-year anniversary of the Christchurch earthquake and captains from both these sides, plus New Zealand and England Women laid wreaths at a memorial service earlier today.
Danny C: “Where is Finn Allen? Wasn’t he selected in the original squad?” He wasn’t in the 13-man squad. He was on standby for Martin Guptill but Guptill is playing.
6.35pm Toss Australia has won the toss and will bowl first.
Aaron Finch: “Looks like a really good wicket and I don’t think it will change much. We’ll back in our batters. Josh Philippe is making his debut today. It’s a great opportunity for him.”
Kane Williamson: “We were going to have a bowl first as well. It feels like a wee while since our last international but it’s great to be back. Hamish Bennett and Mark Chapman miss out.”
New Zealand: Martin Guptill, Tim Seifert (wk), Kane Williamson (c), Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips, Jimmy Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Kyle Jamieson, Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi, Trent Boult
The Black Caps have only made one change from the side that last played against Pakistan before Christmas. Mitchell Santner in for Scott Kuggeleijn.
Australia: Aaron Finch (c), Matthew Wade (wk), Josh Philippe, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Marsh, Daniel Sams, Ashton Agar, Jhye Richardson, Kane Richardson, Adam Zampa
Australia have a very different team due to the Test guys being unavailable. Finch, Wade, Maxwell, Sams, and Zampa are the only players in this team who played in Australia’s last T20I against India in December.
Tygg: “Finch has plenty of bowling options today. Anyone from Maxwell onwards can bowl the full four over quota.”
6.28pm Josh Philippe has been given his debut Australia cap from Mitch Marsh. He is expected to bat at No.3. But we’ll see. The toss is coming up.
George: “g’day. dont get me wrong, Guptill is a champion cricketer for us and has been for a very long time. But surely its time to step aside for the younger generation to step up. Was impressed with Finn Allen’s technique and application in the SS recently. Conway or Seifert can open too. Plenty of options available.”
Alex: “How has Bennett secured a place in this squad? he’s not having a bad bad record and they’ve lost matches due to his bad spells at crucial times.”
Sathish: “NZ Team Selection – Based Super Smash Aus Team Selecton – Based on BBL its great to see t20 leagues playing a major role all around the world “
6.20pm Aravinth : “What happened to Colin Munro and why is he not here? “
He lost his NZ contract last May. Devon Conway replaced him in New Zealand’s last two series and Munro went and played in the BBL.
Frase: “NZ have been a bit unlucky recently, with not one but two heartbreaking super-over losses in recent T20I series (England tour and India). I went to the most recent (hopefully the last) one at ‘the cake tin’, Wellington’s multi-sport stadium. It’s not the nicest venue, (except when it’s full, when Southee is taking 7-for, or when Guptill is scoring 237). Glad we’re getting some games at the Basin Reserve when Bangladesh come!Team picks for today? NZ could drop Bennett and Chapman and have their first-choice team – Australia’s lineup will be interesting to see.”
Mustafa Moudi : “Having Picked 2 Separate Teams for this Series and the SA Tests (which is postponed now), dont understand why the Selectors needs to demotivate Wade by saying “he didnt do enough in Test” and so he is dropped there. They could had simply said that he has Done Great in T20Is against India and also potential Vice-Captain of T20I Team. So he is chosen for T20Is instead of Tests !!” This is what Matthew Wade had to say . Australia’s selectors did make it clear that they were prioritising the Test squad in selection. So if Wade was in their first-choice Test squad he would not have gone to New Zealand. Hence it was phrased the way it was Mustafa. But I see your point.
Abhijato: “Glad for Wade in a way. He’s more tailor-made for white-ball cricket anyways. Getting dropped from the Test side is never a positive, but in this case it’s helped him get more game time as an opener in the absence of first-choice players ahead of the T20WC!”
6.10pm Tanish : “As a RCB fan, I am very keen to see how Kyle Jamieson performs in these 5 T20s”
Speaking of the IPL and the connection with this series … breaking news from Dan Brettig. Australia’s stand in coach on this tour Andrew McDonald has parted ways with Rajasthan Royals despite having two years to run on his IPL coaching contract.
DK Metcalf: “gee whiz, wished there were more transtasman matches. excited for this series, particularly the new Oz bowling batteries.”
Ananya: “Somehow, I feel that NZ are lesser confident when they are up against their trans tasman rival…. Aussies get up and running quite early and maintains the lead….!!!!”
Hamza: “So excited for this series to take an amazing start! Watching from Canada.”
6pm Hello and welcome to Hagley Oval in Christchurch for the 1st T20I between New Zealand and Australia. This is the first match of a five-match series and it is an important series for both teams as they look to bed down their combinations ahead of the World Cup in India later this year.
Alex Malcolm and Andrew McGlashan in commentary tonight. Here is Gnasher’s preview of game one.
tarun: “the last time these 2 teams played a t20 was 3 years ago!” Yes it’s been awhile. They were supposed to meet in March last year but the tour was cancelled due to the pandemic.
Chris: “Is this Australia’s last international assignment before the planned tour of Bangladesh near the end of the year?” The Future tours programme does have them scheduled for a limited overs tour of the Caribbean after the WTC final, which they still could make. But Australia’s schedule is very fluid. But this is the last series until at least June.
