India’s Sumit Nagal registered the biggest win of his career by stunning second seed Cristian Garin of Chile in straight sets in the Argentina Open ATP 250 event in Buenos Aires on Wednesday. Nagal beat Garin 6-4, 6-3 in one hour, 43 minutes to make his maiden quarterfinal at the ATP Tour level.
World No. 150 Nagal, who had to clear qualifiers to make the main draw, first defeated World No. 100 Joao Sousa of Portugal 6-2, 6-0 to set up his clash against Garin, ranked 22nd in the world. While Nagal and Garin posted similar numbers on their first serve, Nagal did a better job of protecting his second serve, winning 10 of 18 points on the second delivery, while Garin managed to win just seven of 22 points on his second delivery. Nagal was the better player when it came to returning first and second serves, as well as in capitalising on break point opportunities — he won seven of 19 break points while Garin converted just four of seven break points.

Nagal has accumulated a few firsts in recent times. He won his first Grand Slam singles main-draw match at the US Open last year and made his main-draw debut at the Australian Open last month after being awarded a wild card for the event. In 2017, Yuki Bhambri upset Frenchman Gael Monfils en route to the quarterfinals of the Citi Open in Washington DC, where he lost to South Africa’s Kevin Anderson. Just over a month earlier, Ramkumar Ramanathan had upset Austria’s Dominic Thiem in Antalya, Turkey, before losing to Marcos Baghdatis in the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Nagal will play Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas, who is currently ranked 46th in the world.
