Jun. 10—The southeastern Connecticut region will be well represented when the Connecticut High School Coaches Association stages a two-day all-star softball extravaganza featuring the state’s top junior and senior players.
Eighteen local players will be part of the four games, which will begin on Monday, June 14 with two Senior All-Star Games at 4:45 and 7:30 p.m., and conclude on Tuesday, June 15 with two Junior Select All-Star Games, also at 4:45 and 7:30 p.m.
All four games will be played at the William Dunn Sports Complex in Meriden.
In Monday’s Senior games, Wheeler’s Molly Butremovic and Montville’s Rori Curran will play for the Class M/S Red team at 4:45 p.m. against the Class M/S Blue team that will feature Paige Kolesnik and Grace Lathrop of Old Lyme, Griswold’s Samantha Falco and Lyman Memorial’s Kayla Goins.
In the Class LL/L game at 7:30, Waterford’s Angela Colonis will play for the Blue team and Fitch’s Alyson Cabral will be joined by Ledyard’s Sara Rivers and Shailynn Williams on the Red team.
Tuesday’s Junior Select games will begin at 4:45 p.m. with Griswold’s Kaelin Waldron, Lyman Memorial’s Rayne Bobbi, Old Lyme’s Victoria Gage and Wheeler’s Addie Hauptmann playing for the Class M/S West team, and the 7:30 game will feature NFA’s Morgan Tainter, Fitch’s Maddie Southers, Waterford’s Maddie Burrows and Ledyard’s Samantha Money playing for the Class LL/L East team.
— Former East Lyme standout Matt Malcom and former Lyman Memorial standout Colton Bender drove in three runs each as the Norwich Sea Unicorns beat the Nashua Silver Knights 8-4 in a Futrues Collegiate Baseball League game. Bender (Quinnpiac) was 3-for-5 with a triple, homer and three runs scored and Malcom (ECSU) was 2-for-4.
Kaelen Culpepper (Kansas State( also had two hits for Norwich (6-7). Waterford’s Payton Sutman (Holy Cross) pitched the first two innings and allowed three hits and a run. Bryan Albee of Killingly (ECSU) got the win, allowing one earned run with five strikeouts and a walk over five innings.
Bender hit seven home runs in the extra-inning home run derby as the Sea Unicorns beat the Worcester Bravehearts on Tuesday night. The game was tied 6-6 after 10 innings and the FCBL holds a derby when a game is tied after 10 innings. Norwich won the derby 7-3, as Alex Neff hit three homers for Worcester. Bryan Loriga (Elite Squad Academy) and Kyan Lodice (Kansas State) homered during the game for the Sea Unicorns.
