England scrum-half Ben Youngs has announced his package for the British Lions tour of South Africa this summer because he wants to stay with family.
Next Thursday, Warren Gatland, the coach of the British Lions, must unveil the list of 36 players selected for the highly anticipated tour of South Africa, scheduled from June 26 to August 7. More than 50 players had been pre-selected, including Ben Youngs, but we already know that the 31-year-old scrum-half, who plays for Leicester, will not make the trip to the Southern Hemisphere, for reasons family.
” I will never know if I would have been part of the final selection. (…) I have two young children and my wife is heavily pregnant with the third. This summer, I have the opportunity to stay with my family and my children. I have always loved Lions. I will support them and wish them a healthy and successful tour. It was not a decision that I made easily, but it is the best decision for my family Said Ben Youngs, selected 108 times with the XV de la Rose and twice with the British Lions, during the 2013 tour of Australia.
Three matches against the world champions
During this 2021 tour, long uncertain but confirmed last March, despite the risks associated with the coronavirus pandemic, nine matches are on the program of the British Lions: against Japan in Murrayfield on June 26, against the Stormers in Cape Town on July 3 , against the South African Barbarians in Port Elizabeth on July 7, against the Sharks in Durban on July 10, against the Springboks team at Nelspruit on July 14, against the Bulls in Pretoria on July 17, before the three shocks against the Springboks, world champions, on July 24 in Johannesburg, July 31 in Cape Town and August 7 in Johannesburg. Since their victory on November 2, 2019 at the Japanese World Cup, the Springboks have not been able to play a single match, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
