While there are three matches to play, the end of the season in Ligue 1 promises to be exciting and filled with suspense.
Lille and Paris are taking a break
Paris and Lille are undoubtedly the two big winners of the weekend. Victorious over Lens and Nice, Parisians and Lille have widened the gap on their pursuers in the fight for the title. Lille, 76pts, Paris 75pts now have a small lead over Monaco and Lyon (71pts and 70pts respectively). A short lead, of course, but which gives an advantage to LOSC and PSG. The Northerners have their destiny in hand, while the Parisians are hoping for a Lille misstep. PSG, engaged in the Coupe de France and the Champions League, no doubt have a thought towards this semi-final return against Manchester City (Tuesday 9 p.m.), while Lille only have the championship to play. Slight advantage for Christophe Galtier’s men, therefore.
Lyon is not dead
A week ago the Lyonnais had undoubtedly said goodbye to the title. Defeated by Lille at Groupama Stadium (3-2), OL seemed in bad shape. And yet, the Gones, capable of the worst as the best, went to seek a victory in Monaco (3-2), ten against eleven for 20 minutes. In the obligation to win to hope to play the Champions League next year, the Lyonnais did not fail. Now at a point of the Monegasques, 3e, Lyon can still see the Champions League.
Status quo for fifth place
Marseille, Lens and Rennes, who are competing for fifth place, are treading water. Held in check by Strasbourg on Friday (1-1), OM are ultimately the only ones to have taken points among their direct competitors. Lens, beaten in Paris, remains 5e. Defeated in Bordeaux, the Rennais missed the opportunity to take three precious points, given the state of form of the Bordelais and one week to receive the PSG. Rennes is 7e.
Nantes, Lorient and Bordeaux give each other fresh air
The fight for maintenance is also shaping up to be very tight. Bordeaux stopped the bleeding. After 5 defeats in a row and a series of 12 defeats in 14 matches, the Girondins have finally found the taste of success against Rennes, at home (1-0). Lorient continues his good series after his victory against Angers (2-0). With 38 points, the Lorientais keep their 4pts lead over the Nantes barrage. The Canaries went for a nice success in Brest (4-1) and chained a second consecutive victory, a first this season. After its draw at the Vélodrome, Strasbourg is 16e with 4 points ahead of Nantes. In this fight for maintenance, the big loser is Nîmes. The Crocs could not do better than a draw against Reims, at Costières (2-2). 2 points from Nantes but 6 points from Lorient 17e, the maintenance mission promises to be complicated for the people of Nîmes.
