The time has come for the recovery in the Jeep Elite, despite the closed session is expected to last for many more weeks.
The French men’s basketball championship will resume at full speed from the beginning of March, after having idled for four months due to the Covid-19 pandemic, decided on Monday the general assembly of the League (LNB). The Jeep Elite will resume at the beginning of March with at least four matches per team, then six in April, eleven for some teams in May and finally six in the first half of June, with the hope of playing in their entirety the 34 regular season days before June 15th. In total, 216 matches have yet to be played. According to the situation on June 15, the steering committee of the National Basketball League has accepted the organization of a Final 8 to award the title of champion of France, a formula that the clubs wish, “even if they are handicapped by the “absence of internationals” who must be released on June 15, explained the president of the LNB Alain Béral, Monday.
However, the allocation of places for the European Cups will be based on the classification at the end of the regular season. At the end of February, the 18 Elite teams were initially supposed to have played 22 matches each, but due to the Covid pandemic and the closed doors imposed on clubs, the LNB decided from November to February to idle for four months, in an attempt to limit the economic impact for clubs which are highly dependent on the presence of the public in theaters. From the beginning of November to the end of February, out of the 144 matches initially on the 16-day program, only 50 were played, to which must be added the 40 (out of 54) of the first six days played from the end of September to the end of October, before the measures of restriction in an attempt to limit the spread of the virus. Some clubs like Boulazac will have to play 24 matches in the space of 15 weeks, to finish the regular season.
