James Harden broke an old promise by forcing a trade to the Nets.
After the superstar was traded to Brooklyn on Wednesday in a blockbuster deal, an old interaction Harden had with a Rockets fan resurfaced.
“Never ever ever ever ever leave Houston @JHarden13 !!!!!,” @edgarguerrero23 wrote to the eight-time All-Star in 2017.
“Promise I won’t. #Rocket4Life,” the 31-year-old Harden shot back.
A lot has changed since then.
At the time, Harden and the Rockets were entering the 2017-18 season with a huge boost after adding star point guard Chris Paul.
But the Rockets fell to the Warriors in the conference finals following that season, and never sniffed the NBA Finals again, falling short in the semifinals the next two seasons.
Harden grew disgruntled in Houston after last season, and the 2018 MVP made it clear he wanted out.
The 31-year-old in November rejected a contract offer from the Rockets that would make him the first $50 million per year player in league history.
Harden all but gave up on Houston following Tuesday’s loss to the Lakers.
“I love this city,” Harden told reporters. “I mean, this situation is crazy. I’ve literally done everything I can. I don’t think it can be fixed.”
The fan who once begged Harden to say had little to say after Wednesday’s big trade: “i am speechless,” he tweeted.
