The Cofidis team will aim for stage victories on the Giro, which begins this Saturday, thanks to its sprinter Elia Viviani, one of the eight selected riders.
Winner of five stages on the Giro during his career, Elia Viviani did not have the opportunity to raise his arms on the Giro d’Italia with Cofidis, whose colors he has been wearing since early 2020. It may be for this year, the 32-year-old Italian sprinter being the leader of the French team for this 2021 Giro which will start in Turin on Saturday. To shine, the former winner of the Giro 2018 points classification will be accompanied by his 100% Italian train Simone Consonni, Fabio Sabatini, and (his brother) Attilio Viviani for which it will be the first Grand Tour. “Psychologically, I did everything to be ready and gain experience before this Giro. For an Italian, it remains the most important meeting of the season. My main goal, of course, is the stage victory. The stage that makes you dream is that of Verona (the 13th stage, Friday 21 May) but I really hope to win before. There won’t be a lot of opportunities for the sprinters – maybe five or six – so we have to be ready from day one. The team is well balanced between sprinters and climbers. I’m very happy to have Fabio, Simone and Attilio with me, who are runners with whom I have great confidence. We can’t wait for the start! “Enthuses Viviani, who has won only one race (Cholet Pays de la Loire) since joining Cofidis.
Lafay and Rochas will be there to learn
The 25-year-old French youngsters Victor Lafay and Rémy Rochas, who will compete in their first Giro, will for their part try to gain experience, alongside Nicolas Edet and Natnael Berhane. “We are approaching this edition of the Giro with the main objective of winning a stage. The team will give 100% to Elia Viviani during the sprints and will not stop doing anything the rest of the time. Even though we are aware that we are not among the big favorites, Elia will give everything and hope to continue the momentum after finding the path to victory this year. We also expect a lot from our young riders, Victor Lafay, Rémy Rochas and Attilio Viviani, who will find the Giro suitable for them. The team has been put together in a homogeneous way with a harmonious blend of youth, freshness and experience. We are also expecting a lot from Nicolas Edet, Fabio Sabatini, Simone Consonni and Natnael Berhane, all four of whom have experience of these major events ”, hopes the general manager of the team Cédric Vasseur. Remember that Cofidis has not won a stage in the Giro since 2010 thanks to Damien Monier.
