Fred VanVleet cashes in career year for huge Raptors payday

The Knicks’ search for a point guard continues.

The biggest prize of the offseason at the position won’t be coming to New York, as Fred VanVleet agreed to sign a four-year, $85 million deal to stay with the Raptors on Saturday, according to The Athletic.

Another potential Knicks target, veteran point guard DJ Augustin, also came off the market Saturday when he agreed to a three-year, $21 million contract with the Bucks, per The Athletic.

VanVleet, the former undrafted guard out of Wichita State, cashed in with a big payday to remain in Toronto, where he won an NBA championship in 2019. He had a career year last season, averaging 17.6 points, 6.6 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game.

While VanVleet could have taken the reins with the Knicks, he did not have much interest in being the team’s savior, leading the team to not really pursue him, The Post’s Marc Berman reported.

Augustin, who played for new Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau with the Bulls in 2013-14, is off to Milwaukee, as is former Knicks forward Bobby Portis. The 33-year-old Augustin averaged 10.5 points and 4.6 assists last year for the Magic.

Point guard Jeff Teague, who also previously played for Thibodeau in Minnesota, remains another potential free-agent target for the Knicks.
