The Volkswagen group and Porsche do not rule out the possibility of a return in the medium term, but under certain conditions, if the single-seaters run on “green” fuel.
After the glorious journey as an engine manufacturer associated with Tag in the 80s with the McLaren team, Porsche could return to Formula 1 soon. Not in the short term but by 2025. The Volkswagen group, which has repeatedly denied any interest in the discipline in recent years, this time confirmed to the BBC that he carefully observed the evolution of the technical regulations and that of the engines.
Fritz Enzinger, vice president of Porsche Motorsport, said that a return to Formula 1 “would be of great interest if sustainability aspects – for example, the implementation of e-fuels, played a role. If these aspects are confirmed, we will assess them in detail within the VW Group and discuss the next steps. ”
The leaders of Formula 1 are studying the possibility of running the single-seaters with neutral fuels in carbon emissions (biomass-based products in particular) from the 2025 season. The Volkswagen group is also very involved in research concerning the latest generation synthetic fuels.
Green fuels in single-seaters from 2025?
The debates surrounding the future of regulation in Formula 1 are part of a broader plan allowing the World Championship to achieve carbon neutrality in 2030 but Volkswagen, through the voice of its manager, indicated “not currently part of of its discussions. ” Fritz Enzinger’s media release strongly resembles a call from the foot for the group to be invited to round tables. It is up to American owners to seize this opportunity to attract a prestigious new brand to its ranks.
It is still too early to consider the form of such a commitment, especially since Porsche, already present in Formula E, has already formalized its return to Endurance for 2023. Two hypotheses will arise if the projects are confirmed: participation as a team builder, in the manner of Mercedes today, or in the form of a motor partnership with a team which could be Red Bull, Williams or even McLaren.
