According to Fangraphs, the Orioles might as well not even show up to the ballpark this upcoming season.
With Major League Baseball’s spring training opening Wednesday, Fangraphs released their projections and playoff odds for the 2021 season. They had the usual suspects as the frontrunners to play October baseball — the Dodgers and Yankees with the Padres also getting a lot of love.
The Orioles, however, were given a zero point zero chance of making the postseason.
Fangraphs’ 8.7 million Twitter followers had a field day with the predictions, with Baltimore’s official account taking the slight like champions – pun intended.
The website ultimately responded to the online uproar that they started, giving the fans what they all wanted – with one exception.
It’s no secret the Orioles aren’t expected to be a competitive team after finishing 25-35 in last year’s pandemic-shortened season. Their most notable offseason acquisitions come in a 34-year-old Felix Hernandez and a 31-year-old Freddy Galvis.
Most of the Orioles’ future is still developing in the team’s minor-league system. Former No. 1 overall pick Adley Rutschman, who was the Pac-12 Player of the Year in 2019 for Oregon State, is expected to start the season in Double-A.
