ASVEL lost 88-70 on the floor of CSKA Moscow for its last match of the season in the Euroleague, the fault of a last quarter completely missed (30-10), and despite a great Guerschon Yabusele.
ASVEL therefore concludes its season in the Euroleague with a record of 13 victories for 21 defeats! The Villeurbanne, fourteenth, moved on the floor of CSKA Moscow, second, to end this European season, and they lost 88-70 to one of the ogres of the competition. However, the score does not reflect the face of the meeting, because TJ Parker’s men were in the game for 34 minutes, before breaking completely in the money-time. The Muscovites, led by a great Iffe Lundberg, author of 23 points in total, won the first two quarters of three points (18-15 then 24-21) and therefore led 42-36 at the break. But the Villeurbanne reacted very well to the return from the locker room, and managed to equalize in the 28th minute on a free throw from David Lighty: 56-56. At the end of the last quarter, ASVEL was ahead (58-60), and so it was still the case in the 34th (65-66).
And now, the Cup – Championship double?
That’s when CSKA hit the gas, with a terrible 18-0 in four minutes (including 6pts from Lundberg). Stunned, ASVEL no longer had time to hope to return to the score, and finally lost 18 points, despite a great Guerschon Yabusele who finished with 23 points and 4 rebounds. Tony Parker’s club will therefore finish this 2020-21 season in 14th place, after finishing 15th in a 2019-20 season stopped six games from the end by the coronavirus pandemic (10v-18d). The Villeurbannais, disturbed by the covid at the start of the season, were capable of brilliant blows, such as the victory in Vitoria and against Barça in November, or the success on the floor of the Blaugrana in February, but they did not always managed to chain against weaker teams after their exploits. While awaiting confirmation of their license for the next ten seasons in the Euroleague, ASVEL players will therefore be able to concentrate on the Jeep Elite, where they occupy fifth place but with several games late, and the Coupe de France, they will play in the semi-final against Limoges next week, before a possible final against Dijon.
