FIBA Europe confirmed this Friday, after a meeting of its Board of Directors, the allocation of the organization of the 2023 edition of the European Women’s Championship to Slovenia and Israel.
FIBA Europe is keen on the co-organization of its competitions. Indeed, after Romania and Hungary in 2015 then Serbia and Latvia in 2019 and a few weeks before the 2021 edition shared between France and Spain, which will take place from June 17 to 27 in Strasbourg and Valence , it is the 39th edition of the women’s Eurobasket which will follow the same pattern. Indeed, at the end of a meeting of its Board of Directors this Friday, FIBA Europe officially entrusts the organization of the 2023 European Women’s Championship to Slovenia and Israel, while Austria was also in the running. The group stage will be split between the Israeli city of Tel Aviv and the Slovenian cities of Koper and Celje. At the end of this first part of the competition, the remaining teams will head to the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, for the knockout final.

Host countries will participate in the qualifiers
The FIBA Europe Board of Directors has also acceded to a joint request from the Slovenian, Israeli and Austrian basketball federations regarding the qualifications for this 2023 European Championship. the three bodies have obtained that their national selections, despite the status of host country which will ensure Slovenia and Israel a place among the sixteen qualified, participate in this preliminary phase. “The three national federations had all expressed the wish to be included in the qualifications in order to better prepare their respective national teams for the 2023 Women’s Eurobasket, because it would have been very difficult for them to organize warm-up friendly matches during the qualifying windows », Declares FIBA Europe in its press release. Playoffs for which the draw is scheduled for next August with the first matches scheduled for November 2021.
