Despite the uncertainty regarding his health, Novak Djokovic won a very disjointed match against Alexander Zverev (6-7, 6-2, 6-4, 7-6) in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. He will play his 39th Grand Slam semi-final against the unlikely Aslan Karatsev.
39th semi-final in Grand Slam for Novak Djokovic, and huge regrets for Alexander Zverev. The German semi-finalist of the last edition collided in four sets (6-7, 6-2, 6-4, 7-6) with Serbian rock, still uncompromising and whose victory at the finish is everything except undeserved. However, the world number 7 can blame himself, because it seemed difficult Tuesday in this last quarter-final of the program to give more a chance than the finalist of the last US Open did against the first player of the standings.

With the exception of the second set, the only one won indisputably by Djokovic, Zverev has indeed distanced himself in all the rounds of this meeting. The problem for him is that he won only one: the first, but only in the decisive game (8-6) when he had led 4-2 then 5-3 and had left pass a first opportunity to complete the set, at 5-4. The end of the game should make Zverev want to smash his racquet even more like his opponent had done in the first round (with obviously quite astonishing virtues). In the third set, he had thus for the first time taken off (3-0 then 4-1) before falling back into the worst and being overthrown by Djokovic.
Practically identical scenario again then, with again 3-0 in favor of the German, unable to convert a set point to 6-5 and beaten in the decisive game that he could not lose, a little later on the same score that he had won first to take the lead in this meeting. Djokovic, on his way to a ninth title in Melbourne, can savor this 301st Grand Slam victory for him (the 80th in theAustralian Open). The Serbian will appreciate even more than he ever seemed to feel Tuesday of this famous tear in the abdominals which had left him afraid of having to throw in the towel before his round of 16 against Raonic. Zverev, for his part, should have a hard time recovering from this loss that looks like a huge mess for him.
