The Yankees are still looking for an infielder and Didi Gregorius is still a free agent.
So speculation began when Gregorius posted a picture of himself Thursday in a Yankees uniform —albeit with the logo blurred out — on his Instagram page, captioning it #tbt, along with a thought cloud, for throwback Thursday.
But a reunion does not appear to be imminent.
For one thing, the Yankees remain locked in on re-signing DJ LeMahieu. As general manager Brian Cashman has said repeatedly, LeMahieu is the team’s top priority this offseason.
The two sides remain at a standstill with no end in sight, but if the Yankees succeed in bringing back LeMahieu, he would play second base, with Luke Voit at first and Gleyber Torres at shortstop — and leaving no room for Gregorius, who is coming off a bounce-back season in Philadelphia.
Gregorius’ post, though, got a reaction from a former teammate. Domingo German — who is eligible to return to the Yankees’ rotation next season after serving a suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic violence protocol in 2019 — replied to the picture with “Watch out” in Spanish.
Gregorius responded in Spanish: “That’s an old photo. I’m a free agent. I don’t have a logo on my cap and t-shirt.”
If LeMahieu does sign elsewhere, though, Gregorius at shortstop could make sense in The Bronx, with Torres sliding back to second.
Last month, Gregorius sounded open to the idea of playing for the Yankees again.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen,” he said on “The Michael Kay Show.” “All I can say is, I had a really good time playing there. But at the end, it’s in their hands. Who knows what’s going to happen in the future with LeMahieu or with the Yankees and all that stuff? They’re making their decision of what they plan to do.”
