Both the Houston Texans and quarterback Deshaun Watson believe that he is OK after he suffered an unusual hand injury at the end of their 37-31 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday afternoon.
Watson left the game late in the fourth quarter after his right hand got caught in a Bengals player’s helmet while he was trying to make a throw.
Deshaun Watson hurt hand late vs. Bengals
Watson, with less than two minutes to go on Sunday afternoon, went to make a throw when his right hand got stuck in Bengals defensive end Sam Hubbard’s helmet — which sent him to the ground awkwardly while the ball popped loose.
The Bengals recovered the fumble, and then kicked a 36-yard field goal to extend their lead to six in the final minute. Watson, who stayed on the ground in pain for some time, was looked at by team doctors during Cincinnati’s drive before he eventually returned for Houston’s final plays of the game.
Though he isn’t positive yet, Texans interim coach Romeo Crennel said after the game that he didn’t think Watson suffered any significant damage on the play.
Romeo Crennel on Deshaun Watson’s injury: “He was able to come back, he felt good about it. The doctors didn’t think anything major was an issue, they’ll check him out of course and do scans … and then we’ll know more about what the deal is tomorrow or the next day.” pic.twitter.com/xsAutdY2gN

“His arm got hit as he was delivering the ball, and you torque your arm quite a bit when you’re throwing. So he got a good banged up, but he was able to come back. He felt good about it,” Crennel said. “The doctors didn’t think anything major was an issue. They’ll check him out of course … and then we’ll know more about what the deal is tomorrow or the next day.”
Watson went 24-of-33 for 324 yards with three touchdowns in the loss, which marked their fourth straight. He said after the game that he expects to play next week when they host the Tennessee Titans, too.
“They were just checking it out, just being precautious,” Watson said. “But I’m pretty fine now … Yeah I will [play next week]. I’ll play.”
