Garbine Muguruza retired in the second set against Yulia Putintseva in the round of 16 in Charleston, apparently due to a thigh injury.
This round of 16 in Charleston was set to be a walk in the park for Garbine Muguruza, but it turned into a disaster. The No. 6 seeded Spaniard was forced to retire as she led 6-0, 2-2 after an hour of play against Yulia Putintseva (No. 11). The former world No. 1 unfolded during the first set, with three breaks and only six points lost on her serve. But at the end of the first set, she went to the locker room for treatment, a priori in the thigh. Broken at 1-1 in the second round, Muguruza broke in stride, but in the fifth game, she screamed in pain as she climbed to the net, and after a few seconds of thinking, decided to give up. The former winner of Roland Garros does not want to take any risk before starting the European season on clay, and it is therefore the Ukrainian, lucky on this one, who will play the quarter-finals. There was no surrender in the second game of the day, but it lasted almost as long. No.15 seed Veronika Kudermetova only needed 1h11 to get rid of Kurumi Nara 6-0, 6-3. The Russian saved the two break points that the Japanese got, at 5-0 in the first set, and took her serve at 2-2 and 5-3 in the second to win.
