Winner of Ankara 91-81 for his last Champions League group match, Strasbourg will play in Final 8.
There was Dijon last season, there will be Strasbourg this year! France will once again have a representative in Final 8 of the Champions League, the third Cup in the continental hierarchy. SIG has come a long way, but it still had its destiny in its hands during its last group K group game. A victory against Ankara and the doors of Final 8 opened. Mission accomplished with this 91-81 success! A qualification that seemed improbable on March 16, when the SIG had just lost its third match in three days …
This Wednesday at the Rhénus, the Alsatians had to wait until the last minutes to savor, because the meeting was extremely close. At the end of the first quarter, SIG were leading 25-22, but the Turks got off to a strong start in the second quarter, leading 33-27 in the 13th minute, which was their biggest lead of the game. Because Strasbourg managed to come back and pass in front two minutes from halftime (39-38), and joined the locker room by leading 45-42. The SIG regained a good lead of nine points on the restart (51-42), but Ankara came back and the two teams passed in turn. Just before the end of the third quarter, the score was 66-69, and the SIG suddenly stepped on the accelerator, with an 11-0 in five minutes, which proved crippling for the Turks.
Ankara managed to return to -5 (81-76), but Strasbourg did not give it the slightest hope and therefore won its qualification, thanks in particular to 23 points from Bonzie Colson and 21 points from Jaromir Bohacik. SIG finished tied on points with AEK Athens in second place in the group, behind Novgorod, but had the benefit of the particular points difference against the Greeks. Final 8 will take place in May, in a city to be determined. Hapoel Holon, Karsiyaka, Tenerife, Burgos, Zaragoza and Nymburk are the other qualifiers.
