Cleveland Cavaliers forward Larry Nance Jr. is recovering from an unidentified illness that caused rapid weight loss.
Nance Jr., who began feeling ill on March 29, lost nearly 20 pounds in one week while bedridden, Cleveland.com reported on Thursday. He’s now “on the mend” and feeling much better.
While battling the mystery illness, Nance Jr. couldn’t keep food down and received a number of tests to determine a diagnosis, according to the report. His illness remains unknown, however COVID-19 has been ruled out.
It’s unclear when Nance Jr. will rejoin the Cavs, as the team is currently on a three-game road trip, followed by a back-to-back at home this weekend. They play the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday night, which will mark Nance Jr.’s fifth straight absence.
Right now, the Cavaliers are focused on building his stamina and getting his weight back up.
It’s been an up-and-down season for Nance Jr., who was previously sidelined for 12 games with a fractured left hand. He also missed time with a sprained wrist.
Despite sporadic absences, Nance Jr. had been a steady force offensively, averaging 10.1 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.8 steals.
