Anthony Davis reportedly plans on taking his time before officially committing to the Lakers.
Although the All-NBA forward is fully expected to agree on a new deal with the team he was traded to in June 2019, a formal commitment isn’t likely to come in the immediate days following the start of free agency on Friday night, according to ESPN.com.
The report says Klutch Sports CEO and Davis’ agent Rich Paul will be in contact with the Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka after 6 p.m. on Friday. However, the site reports Davis plans to wait at least through Thanksgiving to weigh his option on the length and structure of a maximum contract deal.
One possibility is the 27-year-old Davis could sign a three-year, $106 million contract with a player option for the 2022-23 season, which would coincide with LeBron James’ deal. Paul is also James’ agent, as well as Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who is also a Lakers free agent.
Davis, who came to Los Angeles after nearly seven years with the Pelicans, could also do a two-year deal with an option after next year or opt for longer deals.
Davis’ first season alongside James ended with a championship, the Lakers taking down the Heat in six games inside the NBA’s Orlando bubble.
